Jimmy Carter: Eric Snowden’s Exposure Of NSA Spying Program Was ‘Beneficial’

By Evan Bleier, Thu, July 18, 2013

A former U.S. president says that he supports Eric Snowden’s decision to expose the NSA’s domestic spying program. Jimmy Carter said the information that the NSA whistleblower brought to the attention of the public was “beneficial” for Americans to know about and that the invasion of privacy by U.S. intelligence services had started to become an infringement on civil rights.

Carter’s comments on the subject were printed by German newspaper Die Spiegel. It is unclear where the paper got the quotes from and very few American media outlets are reporting on the matter. “America does not have a functioning democracy at this point in time,” Carter is quoted as saying.jc

Carter has been critical of the NSA in the past, The Inquisitr reported.

“I believe the invasion of privacy has gone too far,” Carter told CNN. “And I believe the secrecy around it was excessive.”

Last year, in an article for The New York Times, Carter warned that the U.S. would “forfeit its moral authority” if the government continued to limit the civil rights of its citizens.

Snowden is currently stuck in an airport in Moscow. He has applied for temporary asylum in Russia, but the United States has said there could be repercussions for any country that chooses to harbor him. Several Latin American countries have already offered him asylum.

Carter also spoke out about the George Zimmerman verdict. He said that jurors came to the right decision in the case.
